What is an LED or light emitting diode?
Technical drawing of an LED. An LED is a solid-state electronic device that is much more efficient at creating light than an incandescent lamp. LEDs contain chemical compounds that emit light when electric current passes through them. Different chemical compounds emit different colors of light. Unlike incandescent lamps, LEDs have no filaments that can burn out or fail. Daktronics recommends LED displays employed in ITS applications use high quality second generation AllnGaP (aluminum, gallium, phosphide) technology to maximize visibility. AllnGaP LEDs ensure the display consumes less power yet produces light brighter than obsolete fiber optic, incandescent bulb, and reflective disk displays. All Daktronics displays use AllnGaP diodes. For maximum LED lifetime brightness, Daktronics recommends the LED manufacturer’s specifications always be followed when determining display drive current, which in most cases is 30 milliamps.
