What is an LED and why are LED lamps better than standard Incandescent lamps?

An LED (light emitting diode) is a special semiconductor that emits light without the use of a hot wire filament or gas filled tubes. Instead, light is created by the excitation of electrons when electricity is passed through a specific combination of chemicals. A typical LED is enclosed in a tough, solid epoxy bulb which forms the lens through which the light can be focused. LEDs are far more efficient at producing light than incandescent (hot filament) globes and have intense light output, produce very little heat, use far less energy and last for a very long time. Typical life expectancy is from 80,000 to over 100,000 hours, which make LEDs far more robust than incandescent globes. (100,000 hours is equivalent to 11 years of “switched on” time!). Imagine automotive lamps that are impervious to the effects of vibration and shock and permanently sealed against dust and moisture ingression associated with internal corrosion, making them virtually maintenance free, with more intense lig
