What is an Internet Protocol (IP) address?
An Interenet Protocol (IP) address identifies a computer or device on a TCP/IP network (TCP/IP is the standard for transmitting information over networks). Messages are routed based on the IP address of destination. IP addresses are formatted as 32-bit numerics written as four numbers seperated by periods. IP addresses can be randomly assigned as long as each one is unique, and a private network is not being connected to the internet. If a private network is being connected to the internet, then the IP address must be registered in order to avoid duplicates.
