What is an Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM)?
Over the past several years, publishers of technical manuals have been moving away from the traditional concept of these publications as paper-based books. Many companies are now delivering their technical data via Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) or Interactive Electronic Technical Publications (IETPs). The first level of IETMs are delivered electronically, but are still characterized by a book-oriented presentation, with chapter, section, page structure and “page-turning” type of functionality. As technology progressed, additional features such as hyperlinks within the “book” were added. These book-oriented IETMs are generally categorized as either “Class I”, “Class II”, or “Class III”, depending on the level of functionality provided.
