What is an Instrument Landing System Flight Inspection?

0

All runways at Toronto Pearson are equipped with an Instrument Landing System (ILS) that provides accurate guidance for aircraft to safely land in poor weather conditions. To ensure the accuracy of this equipment, Nav Canada completes an ILS inspection twice per year on each runway. Depending on suitable weather conditions, the inspection may vary from scheduled times and may result in increased operations on other flight paths. Area residents may notice a small, white and blue Nav Canada aircraft flying at various altitudes and locations during the inspection. The aircraft will not lower its landing gear and will make repeated approaches to the runway every 5 to 10 minutes. These unusual aircraft manoeuvres are required to test the accuracy of the navigation signals used by arriving aircraft.
