What is an instar, and how many does the caterpillar have?
An instar is when the caterpillar sheds it skin in order to get bigger. They can have many instars, four, five or even six. The more they have, the bigger the caterpillar will be, therefore the bigger the butterfly will generally be. Every time a caterpillar has an instar it will be slightly different in appearance.
