What is an information highway?
The “information highway” is a term originally coined in 1994 by Vice President Al Gore (1948-), referring to his vision of a future electronic communications network. The information highway (also called “information superhighway”) was seen as a global link between all computer users, providing a wide array of electronic services, such as shopping, banking, education, medical diagnosis, video conferencing, and game playing. It was initially believed that the information highway could take the form of an enhanced, interactive television network. However, the Internet, which has evolved to offer all of the above-mentioned services, is now considered by many to be the information superhighway.
