An independent RIA is a professional financial advisory firm that offers advice for a fee. Additionally some RIAs offer portfolio management and other financial products from across the market for a fee…though RJ20 does not do this. RIAs are registered with their state securities regulator or the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Consequently, their state’s securities laws and the Investment Advisors Act of 1940 regulate RIAs.
