Just what is an illegal golf driver anyways? Before we get into the details let’s get a visual in our head (hint). Imaging you are jumping on a trampoline and as you jump closer to the center of the trampoline you get more spring – correct? Well an illegal golf driver works in a similar fashion. The driver face has more spring at the center of the face resulting in crushing long drives, with a proper swing of course. This spring is called “coefficient of restitution” or COR. High COR Drivers are illegal as defined by Appendix II, section 5a of the Rules of Golf. The COR must not exceed a measurement of.830, any measurement above that is illegal for any completion or handicapped rounds. Can I use it for regular play? Of course you can.
