What is an ignition switch module? What does it do for a car?

The ignition switch is an electronic ‘switch’ below the key cylinder. When you turn the key, a rod moves, changing the position of the switch in the steering column. All of the power of the car goes through the switch- in essence- so if one was broken or going out, your car may act very strange. It may not start, shut off, the accessory lights inside may not come on/go out, etc. They are fairly easy/cheap to replace and fairly common.
