What is an ichthus?
The ichthus is a stylized symbol of a fish. This was used by early Christians to identify themselves. It has become popular more recently for Christians to put on the back of their cars as an outward statement of faith. The fish was an early symbol of Christianity, since the Greek word for fish, ichthus, is an acronym (the first letter of each word) for the Greek phrase Iesous Christos Theou Huios Soter, which means “Jesus Christ, of God the Son, Savior.” It was written as graffiti and was used as a secret password when Christians were being persecuted by the Romans. The version used here contains the Greek symbols themselves inside.
