What is an herbal tea?
There is a common misunderstanding surrounding herbal teas. An herbal tea is an herbal mix made from anything other than the leaves of the tea bush. Tea labels such as “herbal tea”, “herbal infusion” or “tisane” surprisingly have nothing to do with the tea plant. It’s simply dried fruits or herbs that pass through hot water. Infusion is the process of steeping a substance in water to extract its soluble principles. Herbal teas can be made with fresh or dried roots, seeds, leaves or flowers, generally by pouring boiling water over the plant parts and letting them steep for a few minutes. Seeds and roots can also be boiled on a stove. The tisane is then strained and served, sugar is added if so desired. Many companies produce herbal tea bags for easy of use.
