What is an FM3 visa and how do I get one?
Jen: An FM3 visa is a year-long permit to live in Mexico. It is easy to get and you can apply at a Mexican Consulate or here in Merida. It will take several weeks to process and has no effect on your US or other residency. If you begin the process in Merida, you will need to have a valid passport, the small temporary visa card you receive when you enter Mexico, a copy of a bank statement or utility bill with your name and home address, and three months’ bank statements showing sufficient money to be able to live in Mexico without working (can be savings, investments or regular income from a job or retirement benefits – roughly $1000 per person per month. If you are buying or have bought a house, then it can be less, as you’ll have a roof over your head.
