What is an FCA?
An FCA or Focus Correction Area is an area of emphasis that will be scored for points on a specific writing task. Commonly, English teachers offer three kinds of FCA’s: content, structure or organization, and mechanics. The FCA’s relate to the areas being studied or to mini-lessons in grammar. The purpose of this system is to allow students to focus on a master skills a few at a time in a planned, progressive manner. The FCA’s for each assignment should be listed at the top of the student’s paper and in the writing folder when the graded assignment is filed.
