What Is an Export Harmonized System Code, and How Do I Use One?
The Harmonized Tariff System Classification is an international standardized numerical method of classifying traded products. The identifying number assigned to each product is used by Customs officials around the world to determine the duties, taxes, and regulations that apply to the product. The HS is a complete, multipurpose international goods classification system, organized in a ten-digit numbering system. The HS has replaced the Tariff Schedule of the United States Annotated and Schedule B U.S. export code. The HS number must appear on the Shipper’s Export Declaration and other documents in order for your exports to leave the country. The HS system was developed through the active participation of 60 countries, 23 public and private international organizations, and two national trade facilitation organizations. Most U.S. trading partners were partner to the creation of this system to provide added exporting ease to businesses throughout the world. The HS system is organized into
