What is an epidural steroid?
An epidural steroid is an injection of an anti-inflammatory medication into or near the spinal canal. By placing the anti-inflammatory medication in the exact location around the irritated nerves, the patient gets the greatest amount of relief. This is done as an outpatient procedure and may be repeated two or three times. It is most commonly performed in patients with arm or leg pain from an irritated nerve.
