What is an environmental problem facing acadia national park (or maine, in general) ??
Smog. There are some days in the summer when the air quality in the park is worse than some cities’. This is because Maine is downwind from the Midwest, so pollution from factories and cities rides the jet stream into Maine. Visitors to Acadia impact the park negatively by adding to the smog when they drive their own vehicles. The park is one of the smallest in the National Park Service, but the number of visitors can make it extremely congested on some days. Visitors also negatively affect the park by destroying vegetation. On Cadillac Mountain, Acadia’s tallest peak, large areas of the summit area are roped off so visitors can’t walk on the fragile grasses. Other areas off-limits include the grass along most of Park Loop Road and the dune grass on Sand Beach.
