What is an enhanced disclosure and where do they get the information from?
The Criminal Records Bureau check for Enhanced Disclosure (which is why it is commonly known as a CRB check). It is performed whenever someone applies to work with children or other ‘vulnerable’ people, or if you are applying for an alcohol retailers licence. They get the information from the Police and courts, they check your name against a thing called ‘list 99’ – to see if you have any convictions against you that involve children- and they check back over your previous 5 years or so of tax and employment records and check your listed addresses of the last 5 years against council tax records. It can take anything from 2 – 8 weeks to perform. The costs are variable and are usually met by the employer who has requested them… unless you are applying to be a supply teacher or taxi driver, in which you generally have to meet the cost yourself.
