What Is an Employment Contract?
“You may have recently started employment with a new employer and you’ve heard that you need an employment contract. Hello! I’m Robert Todd and I’m here to discuss, what is an employment contract? Well, generally speaking, if you do not have an employment contract in many states you have what is called employment at will and that means that your employer can terminate you for any reason or no reason other than a protected category, for example, race, age, sex, gender, ethnic background and so forth. A protected category would mean that you couldn’t be discharged because you were a member of the protected category. But without an employment contract you could be fired because you came in late or you basically weren’t doing the job well or what have you. An employment contract would define a time certain for your employment, the amount of compensation and the duties and responsibilities you would have to perform for that amount of compensation.
