Many organizations, such as ISO, CSA and US EPA have defined environmental auditing. Essentially, an EHS audit is a systematic, verifiable and voluntary process used to evaluate the EHS performance of an organization. Performance is evaluated using a variety of investigative techniques against predetermined criteria, which may include government regulations, industry standards, due diligence expectations, best management practices, etc. An audit can identify weaknesses in management systems or areas of risk. Therefore, it is an important evaluation tool within a comprehensive environmental management system. Compliance audits focus on EHS protection and performance and the reduction of legal and financial EHS risk.
