What is an educational psychologist’s assessment and how does this differ from the assessment of study needs?
An educational psychologist’s assessment is designed to diagnose a specific learning difficulty. Specific learning difficulties include conditions such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder. The most common of these conditions is dyslexia, and approximately 4% of university students have this diagnosis. So, in essence, this assessment will tell you whether or not you have a specific learning difficulty.The assessment of study needs is different, and will follow on from you receiving your educational psychologist’s assessment. Unlike the educational psychologist’s assessment, an assessment of study needs is a more practical assessment which explains how your specific learning difficulty may affect your studies and describes the adjustments which can be made for you.Students with a specific learning difficulty will need to provide the University’s Disability Team with a recent educational psychologist’s assessment.
