What is an E-mail Alias?
An e-mail alias is an alternate address pointing to where you want your e-mail delivered. An e-mail alias is not a physical mailbox. It must point to a preferred email address in order to work. Students at the University of Miami are automatically assigned an e-mail alias in the form of yourname@umiami.edu, where “yourname” takes the form of the first initial followed by a period and then your last name. (Note that a number may be added to your last name if someone has already been assigned an identical e-mail alias.
It is an e-mail address, where you don’t have a real POP account for. You define your aliases with your forwarders. You can only forward e-mails sent to your alias address to real POP accounts anywhere. Any e-mail for your domain that does not have an alias/forwarder defined, forwards to your default POP. An example might be susigogo@yourname.com, if there was no susigogo then the mail would go to your default POP (yourname@yourname.com). So, you have virtually unlimited alias addresses, that end all in your default POP, unless you define them otherwise.
An E-mail alias is an alternate name for an E-mail address. Instead of creating multiple E-mail accounts for the same person, it is more efficient to create an E-mail alias. For example, Sarah, the Sales Director at the xyzcompany may have an E-mail account sarah@xyzcompany.com and an E-mail alias sales@xyzcompany.com. E-mail sent to either one of those names will be directed to Sarah.
E-mail aliases are alternate names for an existing e-mail address. For example, you may have an e-mail account named “info@tennisballs.com” and you wish to receive messages addressed to “sales@tennisballs.com”. We could set up a second e-mail account called “sales@tennisballs.com” and in this case you will have to log in to both the accounts “info@tennisballs.com” and “sales@tennisballs.com”. Often, it is a better solution to simply forward messages addressed to “sales@tennisballs.com” to the already existing account “info@tennisballs.com” and this way you need to check messages in just a single e-mail accounts. E-mail aliases are also called “forwarding e-mail addresses”. A single e-mail address can be assigned an unlimited number of e-mail aliases.
