What is an e-collar?

E-collar, Elizabethan collar or commonly called “cone” is named after the “ruffs” worn during the Elizabethan time. It is usually made of flexible plastic formed into a truncated cone worn on the neck of the animal. The purpose is to protect any part of the body from being licked, nibbled, bitten or scratched. An E-collar is recommended after surgery is performed to allow for the wound to heal.

An e-collar is a remote collar training device for communicating with your dog. It produces a weak electrical current between two contact points located on the collar. In the old days this type of collar was used as “shock collar” to scare a dog into submission. The “E” in e-collar stands for “Elizabethan.” The collars are named for the very stiff starched ruffs which were worn by high ranking members of Elizabethan society. Often, these ruffs were so large and stiff that the wearer had difficulty turning his or her head, and visibility could be severely infringed as well. At some point, veterinarians apparently realized that the ornamental ruffs also had a potential practical use. One of the most common reasons for a pet to wear an e-collar is because he
