What is an average maturity level?
Considering that there are maturity levels 1 – 5, one could expect that an average SW organization is around level 3. This is not the case. Still, after many years of CMMI experience in the industry, level 4 and 5 companies are very rare. The SEI publishes a quarterly report, summarizing all SEI compliant assessments, which shows that although improving, the average maturity level is around 2. And despite the popularity of CMMI, it is still only a small minority of all software developing companies who ever made a CMMI assessment. If we assume, that the companies who don’t care about SPI have a low maturity, then we can say that attaining level 2 is a very good achievement.
