What is an atypical antipsychotic?
“Atypical antipsychotics” are a class of antipsychotic medications that emerged in the 1990s. They are considered to be more effective than the older traditional antipsychotic medications, i.e. Haldol, Trilafon, and Thorazine. Clozaril was the first atypical drug on the market and is referred to as a “first-generation atypical antipsychotic.” Risperdal,Seroquel, Geodon, and Abilify are “second-generation atypical antipsychotics.” See Antipsychotic Medications: A Brief History for more information.
