What is an Assistive Technology Device or System?
The term “assistive technology device or system” refers to any item,piece of equipment or product sytem, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. This definition covers an array of technology tools–from no-tech or low-tech to high-tech. It sounds as if every available technology is assistive technology. However,to be considered assistive technology, the device or system must relate to the student’s identified eligibility, allow the student to accomplish a task that he or she would otherwise be unable to perform at a level that reflects his/her abilities, be required for the student to receive a free and appropriate public education and must be unable to be addressed via other modifications, tools and strategies.
