What is an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)?
An Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is a qualified professional driving instructor, assessed suitable for professional driving tuition by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the same body that conducts learner driver tests. ADIs are regularly tested by the DSA to ensure that are teaching to the required standard. Fully qualified ADIs display a green badge on the front windscreen of their tuition vehicles. Trainee ADIs have not yet taken / passed their teaching exam, and will display a pink badge. When assessed they are awarded: Grade 3 – An inadequate overall performance with some deficiencies in instructional technique. Grade 4 – A competent overall performance with some minor deficiencies in instructional technique. Grade 5 – A good overall standard of instruction with some minor weaknesses in instructional technique. Grade 6 – Overall performance to a very high standard with no significant instructional weakness.
