What Is an Anti-lock Brake System?
The purpose of anti-lock brakes is to prevent specific steering and control issues for those behind the wheel. In traditional situations, there was the potential for brakes to lock when they were applied in certain ways by the driver. In vehicles with ABS, when brakes seize up on icy roads or in other conditions, the ABS system kicks in to distribute braking and provide a safer stop. In an ABS system, each wheel has a different brake sensor, so that all of the ABS equipment can work together to provide comprehensive enhanced braking that won’t lead to vehicles skidding and sliding as they would with just a conventional brake system. As a rule, drivers do not need ABS systems to brake a vehicle safely. However, this technology does present an added layer of safety, and has been proven to save lives. That’s why, though problems with an ABS system can be costly, drivers often select this option for cars and trucks.
