An anesthesiologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the administration of anesthesia and related issues. Anesthesiologists most famously work in the operating room, keeping patients unconscious and monitoring their vital signs during surgery, but these professionals can also be seen in other environments. For example, anesthesiologists can administer nerve blocks, epidurals, and other forms of pain management which are used outside the operating room. Anesthesiologists have several responsibilities. They are involved in pain management, and any situation in which a patient must be unconscious for a procedure, using anesthetic agents to induce and maintain unconsciousness. These medical professionals also participate in life support, including monitoring vital signs, managing the patient’s airway, and staging prompt interventions if necessary. A The anesthesiologist is a doctor who does more than just ensure a patient’s comfort. His most important role is to make informed medical decisions regarding the patient’s vital body functions during surgery, and to immediately diagnose and treat any medical problems that occur during an operation or during the recovery period. The anesthesiologist is responsible for easing discomfort as well as managing breathing, blood pressure, heart beat, and brain and kidney function. The anesthesiologist must have at least four years of premedical college, followed by four years of medical school, and then one year of in-hospital internship, and finally three years of specialized anesthesiology residency training. Many of the Fairbanks Anesthesia Group anesthesiologists have additional training such as specific fellowship training in pediatrics, critical care medicine, pain management, and education degrees such as MBA and PhD.

The training required after medical school to be an anesthesiologist includes a one year internship followed by three years of anesthesiology training. Some anesthesiologists spend additional years studying a subspecialty of anesthesiology, such as pain management.
An anesthesiologist is a Doctor of Medicine (M.D. or D.O.) who has completed four years of specialized traning in anesthesiology, after completion of four years of medical school. The anesthesiologists at WRAA are also Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Your anesthesiologist is responsible for your anesthetic care throughout the peri-operative period. This includes preoperative evaluation, an anesthetic plan tailored to your surgery and existing health status, intraoperative direction of anesthetic care, and postoperative care in the PACU. In certain cases your anesthesiologist will also be responsible for you postoperative pain control once you leave the PACU. Your anesthesiologist works with your CRNA as part of your Anesthesia Care Team.
