What is an advertisement and its significance?
Advertisements are excellent historical documents. An advertisement from the 1920s explains alot about the culture and society during that time. Advertisements reveal the goals and ambitions of a society. They show the true nature of the people within the society. Companies use images that encourage people to purchase their product. This images represent aspects of the audience of the advertisement. Here is an example. Prior to World War II, Marlboro cigarettes were considered a woman’s cigarette. Their slogan was “Mild as May” and were often targeted towards mothers. During the 1950s, Marlboro changed their ad campaign and chose the image of a rugged man. The image and identity of Marlboro cigarettes soon changed. They were no longer a cigarette for women. They became a cigarette for men. This concept illustrates that attitudes of men during the 1950s. They desired to be rugged and tough like the Marlboro Man. You can find many examples of this today with current advertisements.
