‘Adaptive value’ is added ability to cope with the environment. For learned behaviors this can be obvious. One avoids dangers. For innate behaviors, (eg. care for the young, defense of the group), the value may be to the survival of the group, not the individual. We’ve lived in groups long enough for evolution to favor these.
