What is an acceptable amount to tip a waiter/waitress?
20% the norm?…Very funny. The norm in the US for some reason has jumped from 10 to 15 to 18%. It is odd how the PERCENTAGE changes with inflation. Food prices rise and the serving industry thinks tip percentage should rise as well. A server usually waits 3 to 4 tables at a time. Excellent servers can turn the tables over in 60 minutes. If you tip only 10 percent on a 75.00 tab, then your server is earning 22.50 to 30.00 an hour, assuming the other table are also tipping “only” 10%. An excellent server can EARN a 20% tip on four tables at a time, boosting their hourly income to 45.00 to 60.00 an hour. True, the tip is split with supporting staff, but when was the last time that a party of four ate at a nice restaurant for only 75.00? Don’t be harrassed and intimidated into over-tipping.
