What is an abscess and how are they treated?
An abscess is a lump or a bump that is filled with solid pus. Keep in mind that these lumps can also be tumors or cysts as well. With any sign of a potential abscess a veterinarian should be consulted. A vet may administer antibiotics first, and may then surgically remove the abscess. Treatment may need to be repeated a couple of more times as abscesses can often form in the same location within a short period of time despite being removed and treated with antibiotics. Please keep in mind that abscesses can often form long after the initial onset of the injury – even months after. They can also form when there has been no previous injury. Finally, to complicate matters even further, they often do not occur at the site of an injury as well.It is critical that you consult a veterinarian asap! Be sure to correct any environmental conditions that could contribute to this as well – i.e. unclean enclosure, overcrowding…
