What is an abdominal hernia?
A hernia occurs when the inside layer of the abdominal wall has weakened, resulting in a bulge or tear. Hernias can occur in a number of places, most commonly in the abdomen, groin, belly button, or at the site of a previous operation. Some hernias are congenital (existing at birth), while others occur over time as a result of heaving lifting, persistent coughing, or difficulty in bowel movement or urination.
