What is amp draw and how do I check it?
When we refer to amp draw, we are looking at the number of amps your motor is drawing from the battery. Each battery is rated for a maximum continuous amp draw – usually in C rating. To calculate your battery’s maximum continuous amp draw, multiply the C rating by the amp capacity (mAh divided by 1000) eg. A 5000 mAh 15C battery has a maximum continuous amp draw of 75 amps (5 x 15 = 75). If you exceed your battery’s amp draw capacity, you could damage the battery or start a fire. A good indication of overdrawing the amps is if your battery is very warm to the touch (over 130 degrees). The best way to check your amp draw is by using a watt meter. It will connect inline with your battery/speed control and report the watts, amps and amp hrs.
