What is Amnesty Internationals position on the UN sanctions imposed on Iraq following the 1991 Gulf War?
Concerns about the ongoing impact of the sanctions have been raised by many including UN agencies, NGOs, journalists and academics. Sanctions have jeopardized the right to food, health, education and, in many cases, life of hundreds of thousands of individuals. Amnesty International is calling on the UN Security Council to uphold its responsibility to keep the sanctions under review and ensure that they do no result in grave human rights violations of the Iraqi people.
