John Cleary: The Reverend John Titaley, an Ambonese Christian leader, speaking yesterday. Well the Reverend Titaley is currently in Australia to call for an East Timor-like United Nations presence on his troubled island of Ambon. He accuses Indonesian strategic command forces of complicity in the violence, claiming that in August the army even helped shoot to kill up to 25 Christians. Today we ask, what are the roots of the conflict, a bloody drama described as religious, that could eclipse East Timor as the worst trouble spot in the much troubled Indonesian archipelago. Toni Hassan spoke to Indonesia-watcher, and head of the Asian and International Studies Department at Victoria University, Richard Chauvel.
