This is a poster for a typical “public call for assistance” from a government charity organization, and is not really sinister, when you consider that most charity groups today use the very same sort of propaganda to motivate people to donate to charity. It reads: “No one should go hungry!” “No one should freeze to death!” And at the bottom, the usual charity organization that is calling to the public for assistance. In this case it reads, “Winter Public Assistance (Organization) of the German People 1934/35” Naturally it’s a horror image of a poor mother with a child, who cannot afford to buy food or coal to heat her home. It’s an appeal for people to donate to the organization so that mothers and children won’t starve or freeze to death, which was a social threat in Germany in the 1930’s.
