What is Alka-Seltzer Cold Plus Flu Medicine (aspirin, chlorpheniramine, and dextromethorphan)?
Aspirin is a pain reliever and fever reducer. It also reduces swelling. Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. It affects the signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex. The combination of aspirin, chlorpheniramine, and dextromethorphan is used to treat fever, cough, sneezing, itching, runny nose, headache, sinus pain, and other aches and pains caused by the common cold or flu. Dextromethorphan will not treat a cough that is caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.
