What is AKC?
AKC = American Kennel Club. It IS needed, otherwise, we would not have the breeds we have today. The AKC is responsible for monitoring the breeders and breeding practices of purebred dogs. All their breeders must abide by a code of ethics that means they must breed to meet certain requirements. The AKC is responsible for upholding the breed standards of all its recognised breeds. The AKC makes sure breeders are breeding for the right reasons and monitors their breeding practices. You must be an AKC member to breed pedigree purebred dogs and to be able to register your litters and supply puppy buyers with papers. Without the AKC we would not have a way to monitor the breeding of purebred dogs, we would not be able to register litters, keep track of how many litters breeders have, run dog shows, have pedigree dogs or uphold the breed standard as there would be no over seeing body to set them.
