Agonal breathing occurs when the heart stops beating in cardiac arrest. This happens in up to 40% of victims for a few minutes after Sudden Cardiac Arrest and is often confused with ‘normal’ or ‘noisy’ breathing. It is however a sign that CPR should be initiated immediately.
