What is Adult Education ESL?
Adult Education ESL consists of programs that mainly focus on the language and cultural adjustment needs of immigrants, although other populations may also sometimes be served. The majority of these programs receive their funding from the government. These programs are largely based in public school districts and community colleges. However, some programs are sponsored by other organizations such as cultural centers and libraries. A few are also sponsored by private firms. Adult Education ESL programs tend to focus on what are called life skill competencies; that is, teaching students English often through the content of learning how to go to the doctor, learning how to read necessary forms, learning how to make a telephone call in English, and so on. Some Adult Education ESL programs also offer complimentary courses such as Citizenship and TOEFL Practice.
