What is acute paraphimosis?
• Acute paraphimosis is a condition of the foreskin of the penis. The word acute is used to define a problem that starts suddenly, worsens quickly, and lasts a short time. The word paraphimosis means an abnormal tightness of the foreskin when it is retracted (pulled back). This is a condition that can happen to those who have not been circumcised (surgical removal of foreskin). The foreskin is the tube of skin that covers the head of the penis. The opening of the foreskin is usually large enough so it can be pulled back onto the penis. When the foreskin is retracted, the head of the penis is uncovered and the foreskin is behind it. • With acute paraphimosis, your retracted foreskin cannot be pulled forward back over the head of your penis. The head of the penis is also called the glans. The foreskin is stuck in the retracted position and can cause swelling. The glans and the shaft of the penis in front of the retracted foreskin can swell. The swelling can reduce blood flow to your peni
