What is ACIs standard for floor finishes?
A. Floor finishes, other than flatness, are soft attributes that are hard to measure quantitatively. There is no standard floor finish described in ACI documents. ACI 302.1R-04,Guide for Concrete Floor and Slab Construction, provides information on construction of floors and slabs, including tolerances for flatness and levelness. Required floor-finishing techniques and floor finishes depend on basic criteria, such as floor class, anticipated type of traffic, use of the floor, and other special considerations. Chapter 2 and Table 2.1 in ACI 302.1R-04 provide detailed information on the selection of floor class and the desirable floor finish. Surface finishes that competent concrete contractors can provide are discussed and illustrated by Ross Martin in Guide for Surface Finish of Concrete Slabs on Ground, published by the American Society of Concrete Contractors.
