What is academic advising?
The Office of Academic Advising in the Franklin College at the University of Georgia assists students in achieving their educational goals. Advisors help with the selection, planning and completion of students’ academic goals without unnecessary delays or expense. Students work together with professional or faculty Advisors to plan their programs of study to include the required courses in their proper sequences to meet the requirements of the major department, the College, and the University. Students are assigned to Academic Advisors who specialize in the various degrees and majors within the College. All Advisors also assist students who are undecided about their majors. Academic advising is an integral part of your university education. It will provide you with an overview of the many curriculum opportunities and requirements in your pursuit of your Bachelors degree. It will provide you with the means to explore your own strengths and interests, and guide you to those courses, research, and faculty best suited to your specific needs. Moreover, advising is an ongoing relationship with faculty, staff, and students at the University, people who will introduce you to the many facets of higher education. It is imperative that you maintain those relationships, that you heed their advice, and that you use the materials they provide you. If you do, you will enhance your education considerably.
Academic advising is the process of assisting students in the identification and pursuit of academic or applied technology goals. Advisors help students select appropriate courses and class schedules to achieve those goals. Advisors also familiarize students with degree requirements, help students interpret test and placement scores, monitor student progress toward graduation, assist students with clarifying major and/or career options, and help students achieve their educational potential by helping them to understand themselves and to learn to use resources available on campus in order to reach their goals. Finally, advisors assist those students who plan to transfer and continue their education with taking appropriate courses and getting information on different colleges & universities.
You can rely on your academic advisor for information, assistance, and encouragement throughout your time at UAB. In general, he or she is available to: • help you identify your goals and develop educational plans to reach them; • help you understand degree requirements, course selection, and schedule planning; • refer you to resources across campus that can boost your academic performance; • help you understand academic policies and procedures; and • provide information about potential areas of study. You should meet with your advisor well in advance of registration so that you have time to talk about your interests and goals, discuss your degree requirements, and review the courses you have chosen for the next semester. Its also a good idea to meet with your advisor during each semester if you have questions, want to explore your options, or need to discuss any difficulties.
