What is Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB)?
Dr. Lucas: Normal bleeding is when you have a period once a month, every 21 to 31 days. The bleeding lasts for about two to seven days, and produces up to 5 tablespoons of blood per cycle. Abnormal bleeding is any pattern that falls outside of this range. Q: How is AUB evaluated? Dr. Lucas: We perform a complete history and physical exam. If the woman is over 35, we typically perform an endometrial biopsy to be sure the bleeding isnt related to an overgrowth of the uterine lining or a cancer. An ultrasound can also rule out abnormalities inside the uterus. Q: What causes AUB? Dr. Lucas: Hormonal imbalance often causes irregular or infrequent periods. This type of AUB is often due to endocrinologic causes, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, diabetes or prolactin disorders. AUB may also be caused by: fibroids, polyps, infection, thyroid dysfunction, inherited or medicationinduced bleeding disorders, a benign overgrowth or undergrowth of the lining from which you bleed (endometrium), pr
