What is AAC?
AAC stands for “Augmentative and Alternative Communication.” AAC is used by people who some of the time or all of the time cannot rely on their speech. For example, a child who has not yet developed understandable speech might use a speech output device to produce words. But, as his speech becomes clearer, he may only need to use this device in some situations. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems involve the use of personalized methods or devices to aid a person’s ability to communicate. There are many types and methods of AAC and most individuals use a combination of systems/devices depending on their needs. AAC equipment ranges from no tech/lite tech to high tech. High tech AAC devices look like laptop computers. Generally they work by displaying the symbols or letters a person selects (by touching, typing, or by scanning with a switch) and then speaking with pre-recorded or a computer generated voice.
AAC, Advanced Audio Coding, is a technique for compressing digital audio files. Officially part of the MPEG-4 standard, it is most widely used to create small digital audio files. The current variant is specified in ISO/IEC standard 14496-3. AAC is conceptually similar to the ubiquitous MP3 format. Like MP3, it takes advantage of deficiencies in human hearing to discard digital bits corresponding to sounds unlikely to be heard. The human hearing system cannot hear quiet sounds in the presence of loud sounds of a similar frequency; for example, a voice conversation cannot be heard while a jumbo jet flies low overhead. Known as auditory masking, this phenomenon allows the discarding of data with minimal loss of fidelity.
