What is a Web Proxy Server?
A Web proxy server is a specialized HTTP server. The primary use of a proxy server is to allow internal clients access to the Internet from behind a firewall. Anyone behind a firewall can now have full Web access past the firewall host with minimum effort and without compromising security. The proxy server listens for requests from clients within the firewall and forwards these requests to remote internet servers outside the firewall. The proxy server reads responses from the external servers and then sends them to internal client clients. In the usual case, all the clients within a given subnet use the same proxy server. This makes it possible for the proxy to cache documents efficiently that are requested by a number of clients. People using a proxy server should feel as if they are getting responses directly from remote servers. Clients without Domain Name Services (DNS) can still use the Web. The proxy IP address is the only information they need.
A proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) that services the requests of its clients by forwarding requests to other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server. The proxy server provides……….
A web proxy server is a very useful piece of software that acts as an on-demand gateway to the WWW from All/Any of your networked PC’s. (Please note that BrowseGate does not provide pop3/smtp email support – which is why we also offer you SmartServer3 which does do so very elegantly!!) . In it’s simplest form this means that a proxy server such as BrowseGate runs on any one of your networked PC’s that has a modem (or a fixed connection of course) to connect to the Internet itself, and providing it also has a network card that connects it to all the other PC’s on your network, they will immediately be able to have on-demand access to the WWW via BrowseGate at any time. BGimage.gif (12042 bytes) BrowseGate handles all dial up connections (and disconnection’s) and all of the web requests from any connected Web browser. All good proxy servers such as BrowseGate also allow you to control who has the right to access the Web, and what web sites they may not visit, and even restrict the times
