What is a Virtual Directory?
Virtual directory is another directory that is outside of the ‘default’ location. For example, if you have already shared the directory – ‘c:\files\’, now you want to share one more directory “d:\doc\”. Then you have two choices: 1) If you do not use ‘virtual directory’, you must copy the directory ‘d:\doc\’ into ‘c:\files\’. Now you can access it with this URL: http://YourIP/doc/ This will access the directory ‘c:\files\doc\’. 2) If you use ‘virtual directory’, you can add a new virtual directory for ‘d:\doc\’, set the alias as ‘doc’. Now you will have the same URL: http://YourIP/doc/ This will access ‘d:\doc\’ directly. To the visitors, ‘http://YourIP/doc/’ = ‘c:\files\doc\’. But the directory ‘c:\files\doc\’ doesn’t exist. That’s why we call it ‘Virtual Directory’.
