What is a VAT form ?
VAT stands for Value Added Tax (Mehrwertsteuer in German), and is a tax of about 17% the Germans add on all items. The VAT forms allow you to purchase items on the economy and then be reimbursed later for the VAT for purchases over $3,000. For purchases under $3,000 the tax is taken off at the time of purchase; however, stores are not required to honor the VAT form, so ask if the store will accept the VAT form before you make the purchase. Cost is $3 each for the first five forms and $2 each for the next five forms when you purchase more than five; with a maximum of 10 forms purchased at any one time. These forms expire after two years from date of purchase.
