What is a VAT form ?
VAT stands for Value Added Tax (Mehrwertsteuer in German), and is a tax of about 17% the Germans add on all items. The VAT forms allow you to purchase items on the economy and then be reimbursed later for the VAT for purchases over $3,000. For purchases under $3,000 the tax is taken off at the time of purchase; however, stores are not required to honor the VAT form, so ask if the store will accept the VAT form before you make the purchase. You can get VAT forms at building 2108 on Ramstein. Cost is $3 each for the first five forms and $2 each for the next five forms when you purchase more than five; with a maximum of 10 forms purchased at any one time. These forms expire after two years from date of purchase.
